Kitchen remodels: What you need to know when remodeling a kitchen.

Is it time for a home décor make-over? A kitchen remodel is the perfect place to start. Let’s have a look at the ins and outs of a kitchen remodel.

Have you ever dreamt about designing a kitchen to suite your lifestyle?

If a change is as good as a holiday, why not remodel your kitchen into the kitchen of your dreams, and transform, what could be, the heart of your home?

Where do I start?

In any new project, this is always the most challenging question. First, you will need to come up with a plan for your kitchen remodel. Have a look at remodeling and home décor magazines, or visit a home improvement store, to get an idea of the type of kitchen that you want. Would you prefer something more classic or modern? Try and plan your kitchen’s new look around the style of your home and your home décor. When you have an idea of what you want, get a professional to draw your design to scale. Check if you need to obtain building permits. If you’re not doing the renovations yourself, then it is important to get hands-on project management. Choose a general contractor carefully. Make sure that the company that you employ provides you with a guarantee on all workmanship as well as certified certificates on plumbing and electrical work and get a detailed quotation.

What other aspects need to be considered when having your kitchen remodeled?

Keep in mind the time that a kitchen remodel might take, how much it is going to cost, and the inconvenience it will cause.

How long could a kitchen remodel take?

A kitchen remodels could take up to 6-8 weeks, depending of course on how big space is, and how much you want to do with it. During this time, you will have to think of an alternative arrangement for using the kitchen. You may need to set up a temporary kitchen and dining area.

How much is it going to set me back?

There are a lot of things to consider when setting out your budget for a kitchen remodel. Are you looking for an update or a completely new installation? Make a list of the things you need to purchase; cabinets, appliances, flooring, lighting fixtures, sink, faucet, tiles, baseboards, paint, etc. You may also need to budget in an electrician, plumber, HVAC contractor, drywaller, painter, flooring and/or tile installer, demolition crew etc.

You might want to invest in paper plates and disposable cutlery during this time, although this isn’t the most eco-friendly way of doing things. And remember to add the cost of eating out into the renovation budget.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to make your kitchen look incredible.

What else should I be prepared for?

There is going to be a lot of noise and dust. If you have pets think about what you will do with them over this time.

Remodeling your kitchen is an exciting process and you can avoid unnecessary stress at this time by detailed planning well in advance.
